Stennis questions Lavelle raid awareness in hearings
Sen John Stennis chairing the Senate Armed Services Committee said it is hard to understand how military personnel outside Gen John Lavelle s wing knew of unauthorized U S air raids over North Vietnam after three hours of private testimony from Gen John Ryan Air Force chief of staff Adm Thomas Moorer Gen Creighton Abrams and others. The panel held Ryan s testimony on the probe into the raids amid calls to remove Lavelle and delay Abrams promotion as well as Adm John McCain s retirement.
