Jobs plan to help poor youths finish school
The Labor Department launches an experimental program to place around 20,000 youths aged 16 to 15 in year round public service jobs to encourage high school completion. Jobs start in January at minimum wage with up to 20 hours weekly during the school year and full time in summer. The pilots form part of a $1 billion effort to employ 200,000 youths in public service, parks, and forestry. Local communities will run large and small projects, with first grants in January. Officials say the program will test feasibility of a broader school job concept and how to pair youths with employers, including hospitals and schools.
