Attica Uprising Observers Fail to End Slaughter
A diverse group of citizens and officials tried four days to avert bloodshed as about 1,500 inmates seized parts of the Attica prison. By Monday morning the siege ended with 37 dead after state troopers moved in. Observers, led by figures like Rep. Herman Badillo and attorney William Kunstler, failed to secure a peaceful settlement amid heavy violence and chaos.
