France Quits Washington NATO Setup
Paris reports France will withdraw from the NATO Military Committee in Washington effective October 1, moving to a liaison group representation. The decision follows De Gaulle’s push to reduce dependence on NATO and shift toward a European third force. NATO moves also include transferring supreme allied headquarters to Casteau Belgium, with a partial operation hoped by April 1 1987, and relocating the NATO defense college from Paris to Rome by January 1967.
