Elvis the King inspires hit as McDowell recalls Elvis death
Ronnie McDowell says his tribute song The King is Gone was sparked by Elvis Presley’s death on August 16. The unknown singer released the track two days after, selling about 3 million copies in four weeks, while some in the industry call it exploitation. Some retailers and radio stations refused to carry or play the record, though McDowell maintains it is sincere and not for profit.
