Southwestern Bell must pay $3 million to two families
A Texas district court jury ordered Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. to pay $3 million to fired Bell executive James Ashley and to the family of T. C. Gravitt, former Texas head who died by his own action on Oct. 17, 1974. The verdict split $1.4 million to each plaintiff, with Gravitt’s widow ordered to repay $1,111.36 for falsely claimed expenses. Plan to gradually deregulate natural gas prices beaten
Washington AP reports the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee defeated a plan for gradual deregulation of natural gas prices, keeping Carter era ceiling at 1.75 per thousand cubic feet while current interstate gas faces a 1.45 cap. The vote followed debate led by Republicans and pro state senators who urged deregulation to spur new reserves and avert shortages. A separate measure to fully deregulate new offshore gas faced a 2 to 1 defeat, with Bartletts bid to deregulate all new gas blocked.
