Sub fleet to modify Poseidon missiles after test failures
Navy Secretary John W. Warner said all Poseidon missiles in the U.S. nuclear submarine fleet will be modified after test failures. The program, outlined in a Congress letter, will take about three years and involve routine replacement to avoid patrol disruption. Poseidon carries 10 warheads and is fired from Polaris submarines, with tests costing about $4 million each and reporting defects in more than half of the missiles.
