Override attempt on parent-support bill fails
The California Senate blocked a 27 vote override of Gov. Reagan's veto on a bill repealing the adult child welfare support requirement. Assembly had previously passed an override, but Senate Republicans blocked the motion on a 22 to 18 party-line vote. Senator Ralph Dills urged reconsideration while Senator Fred Marler warned of a $40 million cost to the state if the veto is overridden. Reagan argued the public should not bear the burden of supporting able children’s parents.

Senate kills bill to stall welfare cuts in California
SACRAMENTO UPS The Senate defeated a measure by Sen George Moscone to forestall drastic reductions in welfare grants for 500 000 aged blind and disabled Californians. The 25 to 15 reconsideration vote fell short of the 27 needed. The move signals a rift between the Reagan administration and Democratic leaders over implementing a new federal welfare statute. Earlier a two house conference committee made no progress on a rival Assembly bill, with the admin saying it would adopt regulations if no bill passes.
