Western books impounded at Moscow book fair amid protest
Western publishers protest Soviet seizure of titles such as 1984 Animal Farm and One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich at Moscow's first international book fair. Officials impounded eight books and 200 catalogues from the American University Presses display, with returns of five titles. Several exhibitors report censorship and self censorship as contracts were signed for rights to Harper and Row titles, while hundreds of Soviet Jews browsed at the American Jewish display.
