Navy trains porpoise bodyguards against sharks
Navy researchers at Mote Marine Laboratory in Florida have trained a 450 pound bottlenose dolphin named Simo to attack and drive off sharks on command. The program, under an Office of Naval Research contract, aims to provide protection for divers salvage crews and others in shark infested waters. Porpoises are highly intelligent and have previously been used to carry tools messages and locate lost equipment.
