Concorde lands in New York ending 14 year court battle

The Anglo British Concorde SST touched down at Kennedy Airport at 11 08 am on a test flight from Toulouse ending a 14 year fight to keep supersonic jets out of New York. The maiden visit drew observers who praised the quiet arrival despite a windy day.

Light Sprinkles Disrupt Southland Freeways

Light sprinkles of rain fell across Southern California causing tieups and minor accidents as commuters hit the freeways. National Weather Service spokesman Tat Rowe cited a low pressure system aloft driving the showers toward Central California with showers in the southern San Joaquin Valley possible Thursday. In Los Angeles County, a trace to 0.4 inch fell by midmorning and Highway Patrol reported more than normal accidents on rain slick pavement with Pomona bearing the heaviest sprinkles.

Commandos battle hijacked Lufthansa plane in seven minute raid

West German GSG-9 commandos stormed the hijacked Lufthansa airliner at Mogadishu airport. Eleven hostages and one of the 24 commandos were wounded. three hijackers were killed and a fourth seriously wounded. Commandos used flash grenades to draw fire and breached the aircraft from multiple doors. A woman hostage described the sudden attack as over in moments.

Carter oil shipping bill gains House support

The House approved a procedural vote 249 to 167 on President Carter’s cargo preference bill to require more oil imports be shipped in American tankers. Supporters say it strengthens the merchant marine. opponents warn it raises oil prices and accuse it of political payoffs to maritime unions in a contentious debate.
