Unruh Pushes Private Handling of Medi-Cal Program

At the 73rd California Medical Association convention in Fresno, Unruh attacked the Reagan administration’s Medi-Cal management urging transfer to private insurance carriers. He criticized the State Department of Finance for fluctuating financial figures while Health and Welfare Administrator Spencer Williams warned of a growing doctor gap and potential service restorations amid budget cuts. Williams noted manpower fears and dental and eye care cuts for children, tied to a $210 million reduction within a $600 million budget, and defended the small share of provider abuse as costly for Medi-Cal’s scale.
