White House says President Nixon did not know of any donations to Charles G. Rebozo from Howard Hughes. Deputy press secretary Warren initially declined comment, then said Nixon was not aware after consulting with the President. Sources close to the Watergate inquiry report Rebozo received about 100000 dollars from a Hughes aide, kept it in a locked box for three years and returned it.

Kennedy says Watergate unlikely under Kennedy era

New York Senator Edward M. Kennedy, reflecting on John F. Kennedy’s presidency, doubts a Watergate style scandal could occur during that time. In an interview with Theodore Sorensen, Kennedy cites openness with the press and a smaller White House staff as factors. He also believes his brother would have avoided Vietnam escalation and domestic unrest.
