Regents OK $73 Million Building Budget for UC Campuses
The University of California Regents Finance Committee approved a 1972-73 construction outlay of 73 million dollars with 54 million for eight general campuses and 19 million for health and science facilities. President Hitch cautioned about funding uncertainties tied to a 296 million earth sciences bond and tideland oil funds. Student rep Chadima opposed earmarking 21.7 million of student fees for building, arguing funds should aid student financial aid and counseling. the committee eventually allocated 19 million from student fees for construction and kept 2.7 million for potential aid.

Retired teachers bill sent to Reagan for signature
The Assembly approved AB 532 by 60 to 1 and sent it to Governor Reagan to fix the Teachers' Retirement System. The measure raises the cost‑of‑living allowance for retirees to 2 percent back to 1963 and creates a $5 billion gap to be financed by $195 million annually from the general fund plus a share of district increases. State aid to districts will rise to cushion local costs, with lower wealth districts receiving more aid. If signed, the bill takes effect July 4, 1972.
