U N Hears Rejected Peace Plan at United Nations

British Foreign Secretary George Brown urged the General Assembly to reconvene the 1954 Geneva Conference and back his six point peace proposal for Vietnam. Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko pledged to meet to discuss a settlement as North Vietnam rejected the plan. Brown pressed for joint action with Gromyko despite Hanoi accusing the plan of collusion.

Prison officials uncovered a sewer tunnel used by inmates to escape. The route required breaking a sewer line and pouring purple dye to trace their path. Guards watched manholes outside the prison as convicts reportedly labored on the tunnel for weeks or months.

Fire Destroys Warehouse Home Killing 12 in Mexico

A two story warehouse home in Valle Hermoso Tamaulipas Mexico burned destroying the structure early today. A Vargas family of thirteen lived on the second floor and a survivor Pablo Vargas said 12 died including two babies and six adults among the victims. He was the sole survivor.

Riots Viewed as Consumer Revolts by Experts

Washington hearings hear Columbia University scholar David Caplovitz and historian Robert Fogelson contend recent urban disturbances in Watts Harlem and other cities reflect consumer anger at exploitive merchants. They describe targeted destruction of pawn shops liquor stores and stores run by merchants seen as exploiting the poor based on on the ground interviews across major cities.

Webb Sees Soviets Ahead in Moon Efforts

NASA Administrator James E. Webb stated at a New York event that the Soviet Union has a better chance than two years ago to reach the moon first. He cited their lead in booster rockets and longer orbital flights, noting Cosmos 110’s 22 day mission and Gemini 7 as American benchmarks. He suggested Soviets may attempt a lunar flyby around the 50th Bolshevik anniversary.
