Jobless Rate Down Despite Building Lag

The UPI report shows the national unemployment rate at 3.8 percent in September, aided by the return to school of nearly 3 million teenagers. Despite across the country layoffs in housing construction, economists warn of rising unemployment in heavy and industrial construction as the Johnson administration acts to curb inflationary trends. Housing construction layoffs tied to tighter mortgage money and shifts by prime lenders. Bureau commissioner Arthur M. Ross notes the spread of unemployment across the country for the first time since the inflationary period began, with West and Southwest previously hardest hit. Negro unemployment edged to 7.8 percent, down slightly from 7.9 percent May–Aug.

Saucers Seen in New Jersey and South Dakota Reports
