Japanese language classes help kids relearn native tongue
Ten year old Yoko Tatsumi learned English after moving to New Rochelle from Japan two years ago and now attends weekly classes to preserve Japanese. About 500 Japanese children in the metro area participate, a program started by the Manhattan Nippon Club to prevent language loss before returning to Japan. Yoko, in fifth grade, studies at Roosevelt School with 53 peers, finding Japanese harder than English yet enjoying the effort, while her father Toshihiko notes quick progress after six months.
