Younger questions legality of death penalty ruling in California
California Deputy Attorney General Evelle Younger questioned a Norwalk judge's ruling that could set a death sentence for a convicted murderer. The judge ordered a penalty trial allowing life imprisonment or death, amid federal and state rulings against optional capital punishment. Younger argued capital punishment in California should be mandatory for specific crimes such as treason, perjury causing execution, train wrecking resulting in injuries, and murder of a prison guard by a currently imprisoned convict.
