Big Sur hit by second mudslide in a month
A major mud and rock avalanche struck Big Sur, flooding roads and destroying buildings including the post office and store. No one was injured, but about a dozen residents escaped danger as cars were trapped and several were stranded by washed out roads and three feet of water across the Coast Highway. Authorities reported a damaged garage, a destroyed store, and isolation of some residents. The slide occurred after heavy rains saturated the area.

Coast Guard Cutter Jarvis Towed By Japanese Freighter
A Japanese freighter towed the crippled Coast Guard cutter Jarvis toward Sedanka Island in Alaska’s Aleutians ending a nine hour powerless ordeal. The 378 foot Jarvis lay two miles south of Akutan Island with a flooded engine room as Koyo Maru No 3 moved the vessel toward shelter for damage assessment. Coast Guard spokesmen said the ship was not yet in the clear but on the way, noting a line between the damaged ship and a healthy tow vessel.

Brutal killing of Long Beach woman on Santa Monica beach
The nude body of 24 year old Kathleen Ann LaChance was found on a Santa Monica beach. She had sand stuffed in her mouth and clothes torn in a savage stabbing after alleged rape. Police described the attack as extremely brutal as detectives investigated. The victim lived alone in a bachelor apartment and was identified by Santa Monica Police Lt. Warold Turner. The discovery was made by a couple walking their dog about 15 minutes after the killing.
