Death Take Rayburn, Dean of Politicos (Continued)
Rayburn, the longtime speaker and Bonham native, died after a long cancer battle that reduced him from 176 to about 120 pounds. He had fought illness since late August, receiving visits from President Kennedy, Vice President Johnson, and former President Truman. Burial plans set for Bonham with Rayburn's family and local officials in attendance, as the nation mourned its “dean” of 20th century politics.

Rayburn Almost Secured Presidency in Two Near Runs
Washington reports detail Sam Rayburn nearly securing the presidency or vice presidency in 1940 and 1944. In 1940 Roosevelt would have backed him for vice president but Rayburn declined as Roosevelt died on April 12. In 1944 Truman boosted Rayburn in speeches, but Roosevelt chose Truman as running mate.
