Longshoremen Strike Ends After 44 Days With Settlement
Gulf Coast and South Atlantic ports prepare to accept the three year pact between the International Longshoremen's Association and the New York Shippers Association. The deal covers ports from Maine to Virginia with a 30 percent wage boost raising wages from 8 to 10.40 per hour by year three. ILA President Thomas Gleason said productivity gains justify the higher costs while shippers offered no immediate comment and hoped for ratification by Friday. About half of the 50,000 longshoremen were involved in the strike that began October 1 against container work.
