Use of drugs in war explained by Japanese expert
Dr Masaaki Kato of the Japanese National Institute of Mental Health told an International Symposium on Drug Abuse at the University of Michigan that Japan ended World War II with large amphetamine stocks issued to air force units to boost fighting spirit. He warned Japanese firms later marketed methamphetamines claiming daily life benefits, asserting widespread dependence and social impact among veterans and fringe groups. In Japan the 1954 peak saw about 590,000 abusers, with 200,000 exhibiting psychotic symptoms amid a rising gloom among youth.
