L A County Leads in Air Lead Rise as Board Considers Standards
Los Angeles County confronts a rising lead level concern as the Air Resources Board weighs a proposed 15 micrograms per cubic meter limit averaged over 30 days. Data show a 61.42 percent increase downtown and 64.04 percent in Pasadena, with higher urban blood lead levels and potential health risks raised by Dr. John Goldsmith. The board will vote November 19 in San Francisco, aiming to set tougher oxidant and sulfur dioxide targets while local districts prepare plans amid federal pressure.

Auto emission standards loosened by federal agency
Washington reports the federal government loosened pollution standards for new cars to align with improved testing. Effective in 120 days, 1972-74 models may emit up to 24 grams per mile of hydrocarbons and 39 grams per mile of carbon monoxide. NAPCA notes no overall standard change, as testing now measures pollutants more fully.
