Thant Starts Ninth Year as U.N. Chief
U Thant, age 60, began his ninth year as United Nations secretary general amid a day of routine duties. He guards private life, works daytime hours, and accepts few social invitations while planning a 23 day, 10 country West Africa trip before Christmas. He received a children’s birthday note from Ridgefield Park students and urged aid for humanitarian groups to access American prisoners in Vietnam.
