Market Dow slips as indicators boost oil-linked shares
New York stocks showed little overall change as the Dow Jones average drifted lower and declines barely led advances on the NYSE. The index of leading economic indicators jumped a record 4.2 percent, boosting sentiment while fears of inflation from higher oil prices lingered. Occidental Petroleum rose modestly as investors eyed its coal operations, while Du Pont and Union Carbide fell amid sector weakness. The American Stock Exchange value index rose slightly and the NYSE composite edged higher.
