Scout wins seven million hotel injury verdict in federal case
A youth paralyzed in a swimming pool accident at a Washington hotel was awarded seven million dollars by a federal jury. The verdict, the largest personal injury award in the city, held Washington Sheraton Corp and ITT Sheraton Corp liable for the 1971 incident involving Thoms Hooks of Venice, Illinois, at the Sheraton Park Hotel during an Explorer Scout convention. Hooks is now a quadriplegic. The jury found the pool board’s springiness contributed to the fall into eight feet of water from a nine foot high board. The award awaits trial judge review and possible appeals.
