Wayne Sharp former Long Beach councilman lost a bid for a new trial on a charge he knowingly gave false information to officers investigating his one car traffic crash. He was convicted May 9 by a Com tos Municipal Court jury and ordered to return July 2 for sentencing after a probation report.
In closing arguments Alameda County District Attorney Lowell Jensen described Marcus Foster as signing his own death warrant by applying for federal money to boost Oakland school security. He linked SLA documents found in Concord to calls for punishment of grant signers, asserting Foster’s murder was a result of those threats.
A 51-year-old Chicago man, Roger Peterson, was ordered to stand trial in Long Beach Superior Court Friday as the last of three suspects in the 1971 Princess Louise floating restaurant robbery in San Pedro. The $10,000 theft saw manager Mike Morrell and owner Charles Sutton threatened by pistol wielding robbers. Peterson, extradited from Las Vegas, faced arraignment while fingerprint testimony linked him to the case. Two co-defendants, George Padilla and Garrett Trapnell, already serve prison terms in connection with the plot.
Jerry Dean Michael an economy car promoter testified in his federal trial in Los Angeles on a bail-jumping charge. He claimed Secret Service agent Kenneth Thompson harassed his pregnant wife causing them to leave California to protect her. Thompson denied the account under oath as Mrs Michael cried describing the pressure.
