Wage-Price Controls Not Best Solution

AFL-CIO President George Meany says voluntary wage price controls do not work and would only be feasible under near total economic crisis or full war. He notes history from World War II and cautions against relying on government action alone while urging sound tax and budget policies marshalling labor and management cooperation.

Open Forum Poor March Overdue

The Poor People's March on Washington is long overdue. The rich have marched by jet, not thus. Our tax structure hides grants for those who least need them. Oil depletion allowances, capital gains for speculators, foreign investor aids, huge farm subsidies to corporations, while surplus food goes to the poor. An affluent society should be judged by its poor, not the rich. As long as 80 percent of the budget goes to the Pentagon and only 10 percent to health education and welfare, our nation will remain hypocritical and bitter to the have-nots. Classic Clash Over Crime Bill in Congress debate

Herbert Mitgang analyzes the Omnibus Crime Control Bill as a battlefield of rival philosophies on federalism and liberty. He notes shifts from local grant structure to state-mediated funding, expanded unease over privacy with Title III, and controversial moves targeting Supreme Court powers under Title II, highlighting a broader struggle between checks and balances and crime control.
