Legislative Roundup Slash in School Aid Fund In Senate
In Sacramento California schools push for a 65 million dollar boost in state aid but face a Senate committee likely to slash the Assembly approved increase. Senate leaders hint at a smaller rise between 22 million and the full ask, funded without new taxes. Governor Knight warns of a veto without tax revenues and water legislation stalls as adjournment nears. A proposed special session on water is debated while legislators study constitutional water rights amendments. Senate leaders weigh a fall session if outcomes look favorable.

Senate OK Antlerless Hunting Ban Across Northern Cal
In a sweep through Northern California policy, the Senate passed a bill by Sen. Stanley acting to prohibit antlerless deer hunts in most counties until 1959, contingent on Legislature inaction on local control. The move follows other actions, including a $100,000 study appropriation for Fish and Game and a potential special session. House committees advanced privacy and welfare measures amid a broad set of bills and reforms.
