Stores Shut in Threat of Wall Fall

In Columbus Ohio a bulging wall at Broad and High streets endangered the busiest intersection. The city ordered NE corner businesses closed and the sidewalk blocked while repairs proceed. Engineer's Wife Commits Suicide in Home Pool

North Ridge police reported Eva Phyllis Manley, 37, a mechanical engineer's wife and mother of two teens, found dead in her swimming pool area from self inflicted wounds. Husband H. A. Manley awoke to her absence. He and children Pat 17 and Roger 16 discovered the body after Roger saw blood in the pool.

Escape On Uvalde Ends For Harbor Hostages

Navy reports a sailor, Jimmy Henderson, seized control of the cargo ship Uvalde at Treasure Island San Francisco Bay firing on crew and taking four hostages two hours before surrendering after test gas. Ensigns Lusk Morrison Harrison were wounded with Morrison killed, Henderson later held talks with his mother and a chaplain while remaining a prisoner at large onboard.

In North Hollywood a wealthy contractor's widow Mrs Thelma Macomber 42 died from blunt force and fire at her home. Investigators pursued an unidentified photographer who had visited before and forced victims to lie still during a liquor store robbery nearby.

Costa Rica trip cited in police report on Macomber case

Police say Red Macomber and his wife were abroad on business in Costa Rica. A photographer photographed the couple’s home and reported Mrs. Linda Mintz, 34, drove a small orange car to the house. Mintz claimed she announced the men and left them alone in the bedroom where Mrs. Macomber was recovering from a spinal injury.
