Riles praises California schools gains in 1972 report
Sacramento based Public Instruction Superintendent Wilson Riles released an upbeat overview of California schools and 4.5 million pupils for 1972 calling it a year of significance for the Department of Education. He cited passage of the property tax relief school finance measure and projected $320 million more for education this year while noting ongoing challenges such as fear around schools and inadequate facilities for 260,000 students needing special services. The report highlighted early childhood education groundwork, a bilingual education effort, department reorganization, text book policy streaming, drug abuse and venereal disease programs, revised testing aimed at better results for less money, reading workshops, and Prop 9 earthquake repair funding approved by voters.
