Confederate Vet John Salling Celebrates 111th Birthday

In Gate City Va Civitan members honored Civil War veteran John B. Salling on his 111th birthday. He refused a summer Confederate uniform, preferred to stay in winter wear, and accepted a leather reclining chair and a large birthday cake shaped with Confederate flags. A 150-car motorcade visited his daughter’s home in a mountainous town, with ties to national and state officials and a telegram from President Eisenhower. Other surviving veterans named include William A. Lindy, 108, and W. W. Williams, 113.

Four petitions in the House seek to place a Morrison bill from the Post Office Committee on the floor, needing 218 signatures to proceed. By midafternoon Wednesday several members had signed, with no formal signing deadline. Rep. Murray notes administration opposition and estimates the bill would add over a billion dollars annually to Post Office costs, potentially rising to over five billion if similar raises were given to other federal employees and the military.
