Voters reject city water fluoridation and Furton Fists site plan

Long Beach voters Tuesday soundly defeated a proposal to fluoridate the city water to help children fight tooth decay by 31 828 to 22 801. They also rejected the Furton Fists campground site purchase while approving 9 500 000 dollars in tidelands oil funds to build a Navy Landing at Magnolia Pier. Incumbent and challenger council races produced wide margins in several districts with Mayor Vermillion reelected in District 8 and William T Calessi leading District 4.

Senate Aid Claims Beck Stole Funds From Union

An insurance official testified Beck did not list loans of over 300000 from the Teamsters Union in 1951 financial statements. Kennedy said the money appeared stolen, not borrowed, as evidence suggested Beck misused at least 220000 for union funds. Infant dies after failed resuscitation at home

An eight month old child, Bill D Hardgrave, was pronounced dead early today at Seaside Hospital after the father's and a city ambulance crew's attempts at artificial respiration failed. Police say the infant was found face down with a robe over the head at 9028 Linden Ave Apt B. The body remains at Hunter's Mor waxy pending coroner's examination.

Senate Economy Drive tightens budget fight in Congress

The Senate and House clash over saving money on a 102,564,509 less than the President’s request and 714,500 under the figure voted by the House. The money funds State and Justice and the federal judiciary with further cuts and additions. The Appropriations Committee cleared the measure for floor action after shaving 15,800,000 from funds and approved flood insurance and mineral subsidies boosts totaling about 62 million more, bringing the total to 142 million in the measure.

Man Dies in Los Angeles Hotel Fire Killing 35

LOS ANGELES A man identified as W Polack, 35, was killed and about 100 residents of a Main Street hotel were evacuated early today when a fire broke out on the second floor and spread to the third. Firemen said the victim apparently fell asleep while smoking a cigarette. The blaze was controlled by seven fire units in 25 minutes as occupants fled smoke-filled corridors.
