Sun Blast Effects Still Being Felt
Sun blast from a powerful solar flare disrupted radio signals and created a magnetic storm. Harry Ramsey, chief observer at Sacramento Peak Observatory, described the flare as massive, about 100000 by 50000 miles, lasting over an hour. Dr. Jack Evans noted such flares are common near sunspot maxima and may occur several times daily, with the current cycle showing fewer large flares but potential upcoming events. The flare emitted X rays and ultraviolet radiation altering atmospheric ionization and causing radio blackouts, with borealis sightings reported Monday night.
