L B incumbents victorious in Long Beach council race
Incumbent council members held sway as Raymond C. Kealer retired. Don Phillips won first place with 51.6 percent, forcing a runoff against Paul W. Diefenbagh who had 15.7 percent. Seven charter amendments failed, including salaries for councilmen and nonresident appointment limits. Ballot counting delays kept second-place results in doubt. Vice Mayor Bert Bond led district votes with 65 percent and Olivia Nieto will challenge him in June. In the 7th District, Wayne B. Sharp led with 35 percent, facing Ronald A. Morgan who had 31 percent.

Price Commission orders rollbacks at Super Valu and Servomation
The Price Commission ordered Super Valu Stores Inc to reduce prices to offset overcharges and refund triple the amount in question, with Servomation also forced to lower prices to correct overcharges. The actions cited improper margin inflation and unapproved price hikes across multiple states. Separate political results covered include local council races with Janes H. Wilson winning the Bth District seat and other candidates advancing in the Sth and 8th Districts as the city heads toward a wider election.

Computer ballot problems delay Long Beach primary tally
Long Beach municipal primary counting dragged into the early morning as voters failed to punch cards fully and ballot cards were of inadequate thickness. Only about a third of ballots were tallied by midnight, with jams and hanging marks noted, while officials blamed card quality and stray marks for slow processing.
