Women urged not to back male candidates
The California Women s Political Caucus asked its members and other women to withdraw support from all male candidates for state office. The move aims to free women to push for ratification of the equal rights amendment and pressure male candidates to back the amendment. The resolutions also call for free media access for all candidates and staffing of women on each candidate s delegation to national conventions.

Texas and North Carolina Runoffs Set After Upsets
In Texas voters backed reform candidates Delph Briscoe and Frances Farenthold over incumbent Gov. Preston Smith for a June 3 runoff after a stock scandal touched state government. Ben Barnes and Smith also trailed, with Smith failing to win even 10 percent of about 1.6 million votes. In North Carolina, Sen. B Everett Jordan trailed Nick Galifianakis in a tight Democratic Senate primary. Galifianakis faced a potential June 3 runoff if Jordan requests one. Republican Jesse Helms led the Senate race in North Carolina.
