Dispute over Selma sheriff race reaches federal court

US District Judge Frank M. Johnson issued a temporary restraining order to protect ballots and records in the Dallas County sheriff race between segregationist Jay Clark and Wilson Baker. The Justice Department under the 1965 Voting Rights Act sought to prevent alteration or destruction of ballots and ensure federal observers could view all records. Baker claimed victory with 1412 votes to Clark 92 in the six contested boxes, which could swing the final tally above the required majority. A runoff was ordered after the committee found irregularities in the six boxes.
