Voting fraud memo sparks Capitol clash over election day registration
Deputy AG Peter Flaherty released a Justice Department memo warning of a rise in voting fraud tied to the administration’s election day registration bill. He invoked executive privilege then agreed to share the six page April memo with Senate and House committees after debate with Atty Gen Griffin Bell. The bill, presented by President Carter, would allow same day registration at polling places for federal elections and offers incentives for states to adopt similar rules. States already permitting registration on election day include Minnesota Wisconsin Maine Oregon and North Dakota.
