Soviets Test Long Range Missile And Submarine Rise
The International Institute for Strategic Studies reports in its Strategic Survey 1971 that the Soviet Union flight tested a new submarine launched ballistic missile with a range over 3,000 miles and has expanded its far eastern and Central European forces. The United States may lose its lead in strategic submarines by mid next year as Russia builds more capable subs and new nuclear submarines. The report notes reduced US involvement in Vietnam and Korea while China and Japan become more active, and warns Washington to focus on its own interests amid Soviet power growth.
