New York police indicted in payoff protection ring
Brooklyn District Attorney Whyene Gold announced the indictment of 24 New York police officers accused of operating a protection ring that collected about 1 million dollars from gamblers. The group held monthly meetings and set policy for admitting new plainclothes members, with severance pay for transfers. An undercover officer infiltrated the ring in 1970. about 40 gamblers linked to organized crime paid off to avoid arrest.
