Public mail pours in after California death penalty ruling
Justices on executions drew harsh notes and applause alike after the February 18 ruling against the death penalty. California Supreme Court clerks report more than 800 letters and postcards, most opposing the ruling and urging restoration of capital punishment. Governor’s office notes about 3,700 letters, few in favor. A constitutional amendment effort to restore the death penalty is underway.
