Gavin Says Rockefeller Remains in 1968 Race
Gen Gavin told reporters in the Southland that Rockefeller has not withdrawn and fully expects to win the nomination. He outlined a strategy of a coalition of moderate and liberal governors to back Rockefeller after the first ballot, naming Agnew Volpe Rides Chaffee Shafer as supporters. Gavin argues Nixon and Reagan may split conservative support, leaving Rockefeller as best for the presidency despite Rockefeller’s own denial. He also notes Reagan wants the nomination but would be a conservative Western running mate. Gavin lists his own lack of power base and resources to run.
