Ronald F Whitter pleaded innocent to possession of an infernal device and damage at his girlfriend s Back Bay Boston apartment police said he used an artillery simulator to force entry. He is held on 1500 bail for grand jury action.
The California Supreme Court hears a challenge to capital punishment by two NAACP LDF attorneys for two death row inmates at San Quentin. They argue four points including juror bias and lack of post trial legal counsel, while the state has stayed executions pending the decision.
Robert Emanuel Leonard dn, 32, a parolee tied to 1959 attacks in Alameda County, faces a murder complaint in the slaying of Anna Elizabeth Payne 25 found March 21 after a grass fire. Payne, a Haber skirchen native and NASA technician wife, was killed while camping near Oak Grove Park as her husband attended a NASA seminar. Leonard surrendered to Pasadena police after parole officer request. He previously faced rape and choking accusations in 1959 at St Ambrose and St Francis de Sales churches.
Flames engulfed the unfinished 37 story Equitable Life Assurance building in midtown Atlanta, sending burning debris across nearby buildings including a hotel. No injuries reported as firefighters battled the blaze for over two hours.
A massive fire in downtown Los Angeles nearly destroyed an unused factory previously home to Lacy Manufacturing Co. Firefighters fought the flames with 125 men and 26 units as part of the 300 by 100 foot structure collapsed, causing a power outage in the area at North College and Main streets.
Lorain Ohio reports detail a mail bomb and a death linked to Albert A Ricci a 53 year old former Crocker bank executive from Petaluma California. FBI notes show Ricci and Samuel Hammons Jr both involved with the same woman. The bomb was sent from Salt Lake City and ricci later died by drowning near Petaluma Sonoma highway.
