Grace Liner Hits Tanker Off East Coast Collision prompts Coast Guard inquiry
The Grace Line liner Santa Rosa collided with the tanker Walchem off the East Coast. Seventeen Walchem crew members were transferred to the Santa Rosa. one crewman died en route to Atlantic City. Coast Guard and Senate Commerce Committee launched investigations. The Santa Rosa, with 265 aboard, proceeded toward New York while the Walchem was headed to southern ports with ballast.
