A water tank atop a Manhattan building collapsed, smashing through three floors and injuring at least seven people. Police and fire crews searched the wreckage as water flooded the upper floors and traffic jammed nearby streets around the wholesale flower market district.
President Eisenhower asked Congress for 1.563 billion dollars for military construction in the 1959 66 fiscal year. The request, part of the January budget, would fund projects to strengthen and modernize U S armed forces across the military services.
Mario Sanchez a 45 year old meat packer leaped from his second story apartment twice in the early morning to end violent headaches. The first fall was cushioned by a bush but the second struck a sidewalk leaving him in grave condition with possible skull fracture at White Memorial Hospital. His wife Concha said the headaches had troubled him for months.
Moscow reports Emperor Haile Selassie accepted an invitation to visit the Soviet Union this summer. Exact visit dates were not announced.
New York reports a collision 22 miles east of Atlantic City when the luxury Santa Rosa rammed a tanker at 4 a m. One tanker crewman died, three missing, 16 injured. The Santa Rosa, carrying 247 passengers, saw a fire erupt in the forward paint room and remained stuck to the tanker for hours before separating.
A brisk storm moved from the Rockies into the Midwest and Texas bringing heavy snowdrifts up to 18 inches in western Nebraska isolating communities. Tornadoes and strong winds damaged structures in Texas Oklahoma and Colorado with one death reported in Colorado and injuries in Texas.
Police used 25 photos from a hidden camera at a university canteen to identify a former janitor as the burglar responsible for break ins that netted 150. He admitted the crimes when shown the images and received three concurrent six month terms in the workhouse.
Two senators urged the Justice Department and Civil Rights Commission to probe an alleged labor union plot to weaponize racial tensions in disputes. Evidence included a $15,000 transfer from James Hoffa to Miami Local No. 2 via David Frechette, with Frechette invoking the Fifth Amendment. The committee labeled it a conspiracy and deferred hearings, planning to resume with Detroit jukebox racketeering cases.

A Lynwood teenager led Long Beach police on a 105 mph pursuit that ended when he crashed an embankment on 23rd Street near Cherry Avenue after evading a roadblock. Three teen passengers from Ontario, Lynwood, and Tompton admitted stealing the car as officers followed traffic violations and a series of red lights.
An Air Force A-183 jet trainer crashed in a forested area about 201 miles south of Morristown Arkansas Wednesday night, killing both occupants. The Vance Air Force Base in Enid Oklahoma identified the crew as Capt. Walter B. Horn, 34, from St. Paul Minnesota, and 2nd Lt. Joseph Zucker, 29, of South Euclid Ohio, both stationed at Vance.
A 12 year girl was found unharmed with former mental patient William E. Beckwith 26 in a Sacramento area car near Marysville ending a wide search across Northern California. Beckwith, described as very dangerous, is being questioned about the rape murder of Candice Rogers of Spokane. Deputies noted Beckwith claimed varying alibis about being in Washington at the time of the disappearance.
