State's bad language law voided by tribunal
The Supreme Court struck down a Georgia law banning use of bad language in the presence of others, ruling it vague and unconstitutional. In a 6 to 2 decision, Justice Brennan wrote the majority opinion. The case involved Johnny C. Wilson, a Black SNCC worker involved in a 1966 Atlanta demonstration. Wilson was convicted of using bad language and assault, with further federal charges for attempting to interfere with the draft and damaging government property. The court found the statute undefined and broadly interpretable, undermining free speech protections.
