San Francisco Rattled as Quake Tops 1906 Alert

San Francisco faced its strongest quake since 1906 at 11:45 a.m. with magnitude at least 5.5 causing widespread window damage and toppled cornices. The Golden Gate Bridge swayed and a 400 foot boulevard stretch fell into Lake Merced while Coast Guard rescue calls went out for sailors. The quake was felt from Ukiah to Sacramento and even Tracy City Hall was condemned with plaster falling in San Jose.

Four Crewmen Die in Stratojet Crash Near Pinecastle

A Stratojet bomber crashed shortly after takeoff from Pinecastle Air Force Base killing four crewmen. The dead names were being withheld pending next of kin notification. The aircraft went down while lifting off on a routine training flight and crashed about four miles south of the base in a field.

Fire roars through Chicago City Hall building

A fast moving fire swept sections of Chicago City Hall in the Loop on Thursday night, trapping and assisting many civilians including the mayor. The blaze confined to the northwest corner of the 12 story structure damaged the city council chambers most, with three firefighters and four telephone repairmen injured. Total damage pegged at about 250000 dollars as traffic blocked all night.

Hunt Woman in $50,000 L B Swindle

A Long Beach housewife, Charlotte Taub, 31, is charged in a 12 count grand theft case alleging she swindled friends and businesses of at least 50000 through phantom investment schemes. Investigators say dozens were victimized from Pacoima to Whittier with purchases by open accounts and falsified contracts.

Fire destroys Fronton in Tijuana fronton palace

A massive fire in Tijuana destroyed the million dollar Fronton Jai Alai palace, home to jai alai games, bars and a restaurant. The large complex covered a full block, leaving only the skeleton of the concrete and steel structure. The Fronton employed about 400 people and drew spectators from California for years. the cause was not determined.

Wild driver nabbed after screams lure police chase

Russell Faull Morris 36 of 1107 Colonel arrested Thursday evening after his two daughters Jolene and Kay screamed for help attracting officers. He allegedly drove under the influence, struck a car injuring Grace E. Jefferson, and rammed a patrol car before stopping on American Avenue. Morris admitted taking several pills as his daughters described erratic driving since leaving home.

Area Plants Employment Sets Mark in Long Beach Region

The State Department of Industrial Relations reports factories in the Long Beach Los Angeles area added 1,200 workers from January to February with aircraft plants showing the largest payroll gains. Long Beach manufacturing employment stood at 43,300 as of January, with small increases since then and total regional employment at 128,100 as of March 1, an all time February peak.

President Eisenhower told Prime Minister Macmillan the United States is ready to join the Baghdad Pact military effort. Candy Fire Deluges Trucks Near East Liverpool

A trailer carrying hundreds of boxes of candy caught fire early today nine miles east of East Liverpool near the Pennsylvania border. Myrtle Turney woke to flames after a dog alarm and phoned Chester, West Virginia firefighters. Fire engines from five rural communities arrived, saving some candy as most melted and spoiled, with the rest destroyed.
