LBCC Newsmen Winners at Journalism Day
Eight staff members of Long Beach City College’s Vikings and Saga earned awards during Journalism Day at Cal State Long Beach. The Viking won a certificate of excellence in junior college newspaper. trophies went to Joe Ruszkiewicz for best editorial, John Bethea for best sports news story, Stephanie Malton for best yearbook layout, and Saga’s photo staff for outstanding magazine-yearbook photography. Certificates of excellence were given to Carolyn Hayes for a news story, Steve Mitchell and Nick Spagat for a feature, and Allen Wolfe for a magazine-yearbook feature.

John L. Barrett, secretary treasurer of Buffums Department Store, was elected president of the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce. New vice presidents are Robert Pierce, George Hanawalt, John Wells and Don Gill. Barrett spoke of growth and development and the chamber's role in a bright future.

Services held in Alamogordo New Mexico for Adda Sellars 85 former Long Beach resident and mother of Doris F. Hunter co-owner of Hunter Mortuary. Survived by son Irvin Robertson and daughter Bessie Cummins. She was member of North Long Beach Brethren Church.

Final rites are planned for Robert W. Cypher 64 Long Beach oil industry pioneer who died Sunday after a heart attack. The obituary notes his geothermal steam work and ownership of R W Cypher Geothermal Steam Co. Services Wednesday 8:30 p.m. Rosary and Thursday 9 a.m. Requiem Mass at St Bartholomew Church. Interment Westminster Memorial Park.
