Heroin Addiction Decline Reported by White House Office
The White House Special Action Office for Drug Abuse says heroin addiction doubled from 1965 to 1969 but is now declining. The First Annual Report notes data limitations yet shows a shift of addicts and fewer new users since 1985, while narcotic overdose deaths in several cities fell in early 1973. The agency will be folded into the National Institute of Drug Abuse by 1974.
