Fallout levels drop in May across California
California public health officials report a May decline in radioactive fallout. The statewide average fell to 0.58 picocuries per cubic meter from 0.70 in April, with 0.37 on the north coast and 0.76 in the southern desert. Acting director Dr. Hamlet C. Pulley said May levels were well below danger.

Pleads Not Guilty On Fight Slay Charge
Simon Darrell Knox, 40, of Corrent, pleaded not guilty to murder in municipal court and was ordered to return July 11 for a preliminary hearing. Knox is charged with fatally beating Robert Ennis outside a Mission Hills bar in March, Ennis died.
